- │ Quick-Start Instructions │
- ■─────────────────────────────────────────■
-
- If you are in a hurry to get BOOT'R up and running, follow these Quick-Start
- instructions:
-
-
- 1. Run the Install program by logging to the source drive and directory, and
- type "INSTALL".
-
-
- 2. If you installed BOOT'R to a directory other than C:\BOOTR, edit your
- AUTOEXEC.BAT file and add the following statement:
-
- SET BOOTR=DRIVE:\PATH (Replace with your drive and path.)
-
-
- 3. Reboot your machine to ensure that the new changes to your AUTOEXEC.BAT
- file have taken effect.
-
-
- 4. Execute the BOOT'R Editor from the \BOOTR sub-directory (or wherever you
- installed BOOT'R) by typing "BOOTRED", and create a new configuration
- file.
-
-
- 5. Once you have a configuration file, exit the BOOT'R Editor, make sure you
- are still located in the BOOT'R program directory, and type
-
- BOOTR CONFIGURATION
-
- Examples of potential command lines could be:
-
- BOOTR DESQVIEW
- BOOTR KEEN1
- BOOTR WINDOWS
-
-
- 6. At this point, BOOT'R should display the prelog screen for 10 seconds,
- write the configuration files, execute any existing Pre-Reboot
- Instructions, and reboot the computer system. (Registered users may
- reduce or completely eliminate the prelog delay time. Please see the
- section entitled "Registration".)

- │ What is BOOT'R? │
- ■─────────────────────────────────────────■
-
- BOOT'R is a program designed to maintain multiple configurations on a single
- computer system. BOOT'R allows users to modify a computer's configuration
- files (usually CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT), and reboot the machine. This
- allows the creation of optimal configurations for every operating environment.
- For example, DOS users may want to load certain device drivers that would give
- trouble under DESQview or Windows. Certain games might require an exhorbitant
- amount of free memory, which is impossible to achieve with many device drivers
- loaded. Similarly, some TSRs may interfere with the operation of specific
- programs, such as tape backup programs. BOOT'R allows the creation of an
- operating environment without these TSRs. With BOOT'R, different
- configurations can be used for DOS, DESQview, Windows, and many other
- programs.
-
- What's so special about BOOT'R? Unlike other configuration management
- utilities, BOOT'R allows up to FIVE files to be modified for each
- configuration that is used. Instead of only allowing a user to change his
- AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files, BOOT'R allows these files to be changed,
- along with additional ones. Within my company, I find this most useful to
- modify a network files called SHELL.CFG. This file contains network
- configuration options that need to be changed from one configuration to
- another. BOOT'R provides the flexibility needed to accomplish this task.
-
-
-
- ■─────────────────────────────────────────■
- │ Installing BOOT'R: │
- ■─────────────────────────────────────────■
-
- Create a C:\BOOTR sub-directory, and extract the BOOT'R files into it. (The
- file BOOTRWBT.COM is a small program that performs a warm-boot on the
- computer. Do NOT run this program, unless you want your computer to reboot!)
-
- Note: If you choose to install BOOT'R to a sub-directory other than
- C:\BOOTR, you must add a set statement to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file in order
- for BOOT'R to operate properly. Add the statement as shown below:
-
- SET BOOTR=N:\BOOTR
-
- If you modified your AUTOEXEC.BAT file as shown above, reboot your computer to
- make sure that these changes have taken effect.
-
-
-
- ■─────────────────────────────────────────■

- Once you have installed BOOT'R, log to the BOOT'R sub-directory and type
- "BOOTRED". The following screen should appear:

- Configuration Information screen to display. This screen allows users to
- create a new configuration, specifying the configuration filename and
- configuration description.

- Page 6
-
- Configuration Name:
- The Configuration Name field contains the name of the configuration file
- that will be referenced from the BOOT'R command line. This file will
- contain information about all individual files that should be changed when
- a configuration is initialized. Entering text in this field that does not
- contain an extension will cause the BOOT'R Editor will add a .BTR
- extension to it. (A .BTR extension is necessary for BOOT'R to locate the
- configuration file when it attempts to reboot.)
-
- Configuration Description:
- The Configuration Description field can optionally contain the description
- of the configuration file being created. This is useful for user
- reference, allowing the addition an extended description. Both the
- Configuration Name and Description are maintained inside the .BTR file for
- later reference.
-
- Ok
- Selecting Ok will introduce users to the Configuration File List screen,
- where the individual files can be created and edited.
-
- Cancel
- Selecting Cancel returns users to the main menu without creating a new

- Description:
- The Configuration File List screen allows users to create and maintain up
- to five files for each configuration. From here, users can change
- filenames, access the editor, change the configuration name and
- description, and save the configuration file. The Configuration Name
- entered on the New Configuration Information screen is displayed directly
- above the first text field, and the Configuration Description (if one
- exists) is displayed to the right of the Configuration Name.
-
-
- Page 7
-
- Text Fields 1 Through 5
- Each of the text fields down the left side of this screen should contain
- a separate filename (including the fully qualified path) of a file that
- should be modified when BOOT'R initializes this configuration. Each of
- these filenames MUST be preceded by the drive and directory where they are
- to be created. This is a flexible feature of BOOT'R, allowing newly
- created files to be placed on any drive and in any directory.
-
- Note: When one of the text fields contains a filename such as
- C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT, the BOOT'R Editor will load the internally
- maintained version of this file. It will NOT load the file that
- currently exists in the root directory of the C: drive, called
- AUTOEXEC.BAT. The text field merely contains the name of the file
- that will be written when BOOT'R initializes this configuration!
-
- Edit Buttons 1 Through 5
- Each file listed on this screen can be edited using the BOOT'R Editor's
- built-in text editor. This editor can be accessed by pressing one of the
- five "Edit?" buttons shown along the right side of the Configuration File
- List screen. Pressing the Edit1 button will invoke the editor and load
- the text file that corresponds to the one named in the first text field.
- Pressing the Edit2 button will invoke the editor and load the text file
- that corresponds to the one named in the second text field, and so on.
-
-
- The File Menu
-
- Save Configuration
- Once a configuration has been created or edited, this option will save
- the configuration file to the BOOT'R sub-directory. Only text fields
- that were not left blank on the Configuration File List screen are saved
- as a valid file inside the configuration. (If a file is entered in a
- text field, but there is no corresponding text shown in the editor, the
- file is still considered part of the configuration, and will be written
- as a BLANK file!)
-
- Print Configuration
- Print Configuration allows a complete printout of all the filenames
- along with the corresponding text. Output can be sent to LPT1:, LPT2:,
- LPT3:, or to a valid file.
-
- Close Configuration
- Close Configuration can be selected to close the open configuration file
- and return to the main menu. If the BOOT'R Editor detects that changes
- have not been saved when this menu option is selected, it will issue a
- warning message, and present the option to save the changes before
- returning to the main menu.
-
-
- The Configuration Menu
-
- Name / Description
- Selecting this option from the Configuration menu allows users to
- optionally change the current configuration's name and/or associated
- description. If only the description is changed, BOOT'R updates the
- description in the configuration file when the Save Configuration menu
- option is selected. If the name is changed, BOOT'R writes an entirely
- new configuration file when the Save Configuration menu option is
- selected.

- Description:
- The BOOT'R Editor's built-in text editor allows quick and easy editing of
- each of the files maintained within a configuration.
-
-
- The File Menu
-
- Load Text:
- When you are creating your initial configurations with the BOOT'R
- Editor, you may find the Load Text feature useful. From the editor's
- File menu, Load Text allows text from an existing ASCII file to be
- loaded directly into the editor. Use this feature wisely, as it will
- replace any text already contained in the editor.
-
- Save:
- This instructs the BOOT'R Editor to save this file into a temporary
- variable, thus remembering any changes that have been made during the
- current editing session. It does NOT save the complete configuration
- file to the hard drive. This allows complete editing of each internal
- file, prior to saving the entire configuration from the Configuration
- File List screen.
-
- Exit Editor:
- Selecting this command from the menu will cause the BOOT'R Editor to
- exit from the editing screen. If changes have been made to this
- configuration that have not been saved, the BOOT'R Editor will issue a
- warning message with the option to save.
-
-
-

-
- The Edit Menu
-
- Cut:
- Selecting "Cut" from the Edit menu will copy all of the highlighted text
- to the "clipboard", and remove it from the editing screen.
-
- Copy:
- Selecting "Copy" from the Edit menu will copy all of the highlighted
- text to the "clipboard", but will NOT remove it from the editing screen.
-
- Paste:
- Selecting "Paste" from the Edit menu copies all text currently on the
- "clipboard" to the editing screen, inserting it at the point of the
- cursor. Any text that is highlighted at the time the paste command is
- invoked is replaced with the "clipboard" text.
-
- Delete:
- Selecting "Delete" from the Edit menu removes all highlighted text from
- the editing screen, without altering the contents of the "clipboard".
-
-
- The Window Menu
-
- Normal:
- The "Normal" command, invoked from the Window menu, allows the editing
- screen to be redrawn into a smaller viewing / editing window. This
- command is only valid when the editing screen is in "Maximized" mode.
-
- Maximize:
- The "Maximize" command, invoked from the Window menu, allows the editing
- window to be redrawn to completely fill the screen. This command is
- only valid when the editing screen is in "Normal" mode.
-
- Note: Mouse users can easily switch between "Normal" and "Maximize"
- modes by clicking on the Maximize button, located in the upper-
- right corner of the title bar.

- Description:
- The Open Configuration screen allows users to open an existing
- configuration file for editing and maintenance. Make sure that any files
- being opened in this manner were originally saved with the BOOT'R Editor.
- The BOOT'R Editor will NOT read files properly if they have not been
- created with the BOOT'R Editor!
-
- Note: For users upgrading from a previous version of BOOT'R, we
- recommend that create a new configuration, and load your existing
- text files into the built-in text editor. This will ensure that
- the files are created and saved properly, prior to any attempts to
- open them with this feature.
-
- Filename:
- This text field allows users to manually enter the name of a configuration
- file. If you enter a filename without an extension, the BOOT'R Editor
- appends a .BTR extension and searches for a file in the current directory
- with the name entered. If the file exists, it is automatically opened
- when you press ENTER. If the file does not exist, the BOOT'R Editor will
- either advance the cursor to the Files list box for manual selection, or
- issue an error message, depending on the existing conditions.

-
- ■─────────────────────────────────────────■
- │ Using BOOT'R: │
- ■─────────────────────────────────────────■
-
- The BOOTR.EXE file operates by using command line parameters. To change to a
- different configuration using BOOT'R, you simply specify the desired
- configuration on the BOOT'R command line.
-
-
- The BOOT'R command line structure looks like this:
-
-
- BOOTR CONFIGURATION TEST
-
-
- BOOTR BOOTR should always be the first entry entered on the command
- line. All command line entries should be in UPPER CASE, and
- should be separated by a single space.
-
-
- CONFIGURATION This is the name of the desired configuration. Each
- configuration is maintained in a separate .BTR file, that is
- created using the BOOT'R Editor. In order for BOOT'R to work
- properly, there MUST be a file in the default BOOTR sub-
- directory with the name of the configuration file you specify
- here.
-
-
- TEST This command line parameter is optional, and allows the
- configuration files to be changed WITHOUT actually rebooting
- the computer. This option is useful to test BOOT'R and see if
- the CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT, and any other files are being
- written properly. It is also useful to verify that the cache
- is being properly flushed and disabled, without risking data
- corruption.
-
-
- BOOT'R Examples:
-
- BOOTR CPBACKUP BOOTR NORMAL
- BOOTR DESQVIEW BOOTR NOVELL
- BOOTR DESQVIEW TEST BOOTR WINDOWS
- BOOTR LANTASTIC BOOTR WINDOWS TEST
- BOOTR KEEN1
-
-
- When you type a similar BOOT'R command line and press ENTER, BOOT'R will
- display the prelog screen for 10 seconds, write the configuration files,
- execute any existing Pre-Reboot Instructions, and reboot the computer system.
- (Registered users may reduce or completely eliminate the prelog delay time.
- Please see the section entitled "Registration", near the beginning of this
- documentation file.)

- ■─────────────────────────────────────────■
- │ Advanced BOOT'R features: │
- ■─────────────────────────────────────────■
-
- Advanced Feature #1: Using the BOOTR Editor to specify a location for the
- configuration files.
-
- BOOT'R allows the capability to specify the exact location of the new
- configuration files when they are written. There is no requirement that
- they be placed on the current drive, or in the root directory. This allows
- the modification of files that are inaccessable to other configuration
- managers.
-
-
-
- Advanced Feature #2: Using .BTR files to modify up to five different
- configuration files.
-
- Not only can the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files be changed, but up
- to five different files can be changed for each configuration. For example,
- network users may maintain a file called SHELL.CFG in their workstation's root
- directory. Rather than keeping the same set of instructions for each
- configuration maintained, SHELL.CFG could be optimized for each configuration
- that uses the network.

- │ Using BOOT'R With A Multitasker: │
- ■─────────────────────────────────────────■
-
- Caution is advised when using BOOT'R in combination with Windows or DESQview.
- Exit all open windows and exit the multitaskers BEFORE attempting to execute
- BOOT'R. Attempting to execute BOOT'R from inside a multitasking window could
- cause data corruption! You have been warned!
-
-
-
- ■─────────────────────────────────────────■
- │ Cautions! │
- ■─────────────────────────────────────────■
-
- Do NOT use BOOT'R in combination with any disk cache that performs write-
- caching, unless you flush and disable the cache by entering a DOS command on
- the Pre-Reboot Instructions screen of the BOOT'R Editor. Please refer to the
- "Pre-Reboot Instructions" section of this documentation for more information.
